Turmeric's Anti-Ulcer Effects

Turmeric has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and/or antimicrobial properties that in general may help prevent and heal gastric ulcer. Whole turmeric extract's specific anti-ulcer effects include: (vii.177)

  • Inhibits secretion of gastric acid. (vii.183)
  • Blocks histamine receptors that trigger inflammation. (vii.183)
  • Increases mucus and helps restore normal biochemical conditions to the gastric wall. (vii.184)
Individual Turmeric Compound Effects

Studies show that compounds in turmeric, such as beta-sesquiphellandrene and zingiberene, also have anti-ulcer properties. (vii.20, 29, 48)

Other specific turmeric compounds (including curcumin) reported to have properties that could help relieve ulcers include:

Table VII.26: Turmeric Compounds that May Help Relieve Ulcers
Anti-Ulcer Turmeric Compounds Properties that May Benefit Patients Prone to Ulcers

Beta-sitosterol (vii.29, 185)

  • Anti-inflammatory effects. (vii.22)

Caffeic acid (vii.20, 48)

Curcumin (vii.48)

  • Anti-inflammatory effects. (vii.48)
  • Antioxidant activity. (vii.48)
  • Blocks H. pylori bacterial growth and prevents H. pylori from activating NF-κB, a transcription factor protein that triggers genes to produce inflammatory cytokine proteins. (vii.51)
  • Significantly delays formation of bacterial biofilm(vii.181)
  • Inhibits bacteria's ability to stick to the stomach lining (in lab experiments). (vii.181)
  • Prevents damage caused by the NSAID indomethacin (85% in an animal study). (vii.177)
  • Helps regulate enzyme activity and speeds up healing time of stomach ulcers (in an animal study, comparable to that of the anti-ulcer drug omeprazole). (vii.177)

Eugenol (vii.20, 48)

Germacrone (vii.20, 48)

Quercetin (vii.25, 185)

Clinical Evidence

Table VII.27: Clinical Evidence of Turmeric's Effects on Ulcers
Study 1 Details Turmeric Form or Compound Used; Dosage

Open clinical study involving: (vii.186)

  • 55 adults (male and female) with peptic ulcer.
  • 35 of the 55 patents were positive for H. pylori
  • 500 mg turmeric oral supplement. (vii.186)
  • 4 times daily, 1 hour before eating, for 4-8 weeks. (vii.186)
Outcomes
  • Turmeric healed ulcers in 35 of 55 patients in one month. 47 of 55 were healed by the end of the 2-month study. (vii.186)
  • By the end of the study 20 of the 35 patients who were H. pylori (+) became H. pylori (-), 15 of them within 4 weeks. (vii.186)
Cure Rates
Ulcers H. Pylori Infection

85% in 2 months. (vii.186)

57% in 2 months. (vii.186)

Study 2 Details Turmeric Form or Compound Used; Dosage

Open clinical study involving: (vii.187)

  • 45 adults (male and female).
  • Of the 45 patients, 25 had peptic ulcer confirmed by endoscopy; 20 had gastritis and only the beginning signs of ulcers.
  • 600 mg turmeric oral supplement. (vii.187)
  • 5 times daily (30-60 minutes before meals, 4 p.m., and before bedtime) for 4-12 weeks. (vii.187)
Outcomes
  • Turmeric healed ulcers in 48% of patients in one month, 72% in 8 weeks, and 76% in 12 weeks. (vii.187)
  • In the same study, stomach pain was resolved in who also took the turmeric. Within 1-2 weeks, all 20 were able to resume a normal (rather than soft) diet. (vii.187)
Cure Rates
Ulcers H. Pylori Infection

76% in 3 months. (vii.187)

Not tested. (vii.187)

Study 3 Details Turmeric Form or Compound Used; Dosage

Open clinical study involving: (vii.188)

  • 36 adults (male and female) with gastritis.
  • All patents were positive for H. pylori.
Patients randomly assigned to take either turmeric or OAM: (vii.188)
  • 700 mg turmeric oral supplement 3 times daily for 4 weeks.
  • Anti-ulcer drug treatment regimen (OAM): 20 mg omeprazole and antibiotics (1-g amoxicillin and 800 mg metronidazole) twice daily for 1 week.
Outcomes
  • H. pylori cured in 15 of the 19 who had taken OAM, compared to only 1 of the patients who took turmeric. (vii.188)
  • Levels of inflammation were measured in all patients before and at the end of the treatments. There were no statistically significant differences in most markers. However, any significantly reduced levels of inflammatory proteins were found in the patients treated with OAM, not those treated with turmeric. (vii.188)
  • Patients in the turmeric group reported improved symptoms, as has been reported in patients from other studies involving curcumin. The researchers suggest that the herbal treatment may be useful in combination with conventional treatments. (vii.188)
  • Study authors indicate that symptom relief from curcumin could stem from its abilities to inhibit gastric acid secretion and block histamine receptors that trigger inflammation. However, in the research referenced it was turmeric extract that had these effects, not curcumin by itself. (vii.183, 188)
Cure Rates
Ulcers H. Pylori Infection

Rates not reported; turmeric offered symptom relief. (vii.188)

5.9% in 4 weeks. (vii.188)

Study 4 Details Turmeric Form or Compound Used; Dosage
  • Double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study. (vii.189)
  • 118 adults (male and female) with duodenal ulcers at least 5 mm in diameter. (vii.189)

6 g/day of turmeric supplement for 4-8 weeks or placebo. (vii.189)

Outcomes

The healing rate for patients in the turmeric group was actually less than those in the placebo group. (vii.189)

Cure Rates
Ulcers H. Pylori Infection

27% (compared to 29% in placebo). (vii.189)

Not tested. (vii.189)

Study 5 Details Turmeric Form or Compound Used; Dosage

Open clinical study involving: (vii.178)

  • 25 adults (male and female) with gastritis.
  • All patents were positive for H. pylori.

Combination treatment of the following for one week: (vii.178, 190-191)

  • 30 mg curcumin oral supplement 2 times daily.
  • 100 mg lactoferrin twice daily.
  • 600 mg N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) twice daily.
  • 20 mg twice a day of the anti-ulcer drug pantoprazole (similar to omeprazole).
  • Anti-ulcer drug treatment regimen (OAM): 20 mg omeprazole and antibiotics (1-g amoxicillin and 800 mg metronidazole) twice daily for 1 week.
Outcomes

Significant improvement in symptoms and inflammation two months after treatment. (vii.178)

Cure Rates
Ulcers H. Pylori Infection

Rates not reported; curcumin combination treatment offered symptom relief. (vii.178)

12% after 2 months following 1 week of treatment. (vii.178)

Conventional antibiotics are often ineffective against bacteria that form biofilm(vii.181)
Suppressed MMP-9 while promoting MMP-2. (vii.177)
A protein found in cow and human milk, especially in the first milk produced when a baby is born (colostrum), that is known to have natural antimicrobial effects and support the immune system. (vii.190)
Derived from an amino acid, NAC is a natural antioxidant. (vii.191)
