Quercetin

Table II.32: Quercetin (ii.1519374151547075-7779-828694100104117125-133)
WHAT IS IT?

Quercetin is a flavonol type of flavonoid in turmeric. It is a common compound in many plants. These include fruits, grains, and vegetables such as apples, artichoke, asparagus, broccoli, buckwheat, citrus fruit, lettuce, onions, olives, and pomegranate. Examples of herbs and spices containing quercetin include astragalus, chamomile, chaparral, cloves, dill, echinacea, elderberry, eucalyptus, fenugreek, ginkgo, gotu kola, hawthorn, hydrangea, marshmallow, mayapple, passion flower, pepper, schisandra, Spanish broom, St. John's wort, tarragon, and witch hazel. Carob and tea also contain quercetin.

Research indicates that quercetin increases the bioavailability of curcumin from turmeric. Quercetin and curcumin work particularly well together, enhancing their healthful benefits. And population studies suggest that whole foods and spices may actually work better than individual compounds in preventing diseases.

POTENTIAL HEALTH BENEFITS

Research suggests that quercetin has beneficial effects that may help prevent and treat a number of diseases. These include cancer, conditions that affect the brain and metabolism, and getting rid of microbes and toxins.
